Des Moines Refugee Support is thrilled to announce it will be hosting its first–ever fundraising event on May 9, 2024, at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates in downtown Des Moines. Our efforts to support refugees in the Des Moines area have increased significantly in the past eight years since the organization was founded. As we add more ways to help Des Moines’ newest citizens, your support will help us achieve our mission and make their dreams become a reality.
There are currently 26.6 million refugees in the world. 6.6 million of them live in refugee camps, which are meant to be temporary, but many people end up staying for decades. Less than 3% of refugees will return to their home country, and just over 2% of refugees will be officially resettled in a different country. Being chosen for resettlement is akin to winning the lottery. Des Moines Refugee Support works to fill in the gaps for refugees who are chosen to make their new homes in the Des Moines metro.
The money raised through this event will help our board of directors and fellowship of volunteers assist families who are starting out their American life in Des Moines. When relocating to the U.S., refugees typically only receive three months of assistance. Des Moines Refugee Support aims to fill in the assistance gaps for refugees in the Greater Des Moines area.
